This compact, but spacious house for Mr. & Mrs. Schultz and their daughter was completed in February of 2010.

The Brief
A compact social house with home offices that optimize on the view.
The Site
The site is located on the hilly part of Waterkloof Ridge over looking the park in Eridanus street. The stand was a challenging stand -- steep slope, difficult entry, due to panhandle as well as the existing buildings around the site -- which could possibly block views and create privacy invasion.
The Design
Aesthetically House Schultz did not conform to a specific style, but drew inspiration form the clients personality and style. The house has a contemporary feel and is filled with parches of colour and textures, chosen by Mrs. Schultz herself. The colour palette of the design is limited to create a coherent look in subtle and tasteful shades of "brown-grey". It has some "industrial" influences with the strategic use of steel work and i-beams as lintels.
The design is centered around the central fireplace and staircase, in the dining room. The house is designed in compact layout with short distances between spaces and rooms. It was required by the client that there be no entrance hall, and that the "front door" enter into one of the main living spaces.
The ground floor houses two study-cum-offices, a sewing room, the kitchen, the dining room, living/TV room and entertainment patio from which on also enters the house.
All living spaces are north facing, which also then captures the view over the park at the lower end of the hill.
The first floor houses the living quarters, main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, separate walk in closets, a bath with a view, a shower to die for and the piece de resistance, a jacuzzi with a 120 degree view over the jacaranda filled Waterkloof Ridge.
The semi-basement floor has a large garage for 3 vehicles and space for some DIY work. The secret room of the house is also tucked away under the dining room on this floor; the soundproof AV room with built in cellar.
The landscaping is done in a minimalist fashion with lost natural materials and grassy plants. Large trees were also planted to make the garden seem more established.
The house is finished of with well chosen furniture and a bustling water feature at the foot of the patio.
